Planting Charts and Thought-Provoking Essays

This Calendar has many aspects: a basic introduction to astronomy, a simple ephemeris, a planting guide, a star map, aid for following the movement of the planets in the night sky, and articles by nine different authors. All of these attempt to provide a true picture of the world outside us and ideas to assist in developing a healthy relation to that world. Writing in her introduction to this year's calendar, Sherry Wildfeuer notes:

"When I began to produce this Calendar in 1977, I drew on the wisdom and good will of my elders and peers as authors. This year I am pleased to have drawn largely on the wisdom and good will of a newer and younger generation of biodynamic farmers and gardeners, and I trust you will be as impressed as I am with their contributions. In the past, as editor, I chose a theme for each year's Calendar. Over time, however, I realized that it is much more interesting to ask people to write on the subject that is most alive for them. So now I simply invite the authors to choose an aspect of the general theme Biodynamics in Practice. Thus the reader is exposed to a broad scope of concerns within the biodynamic movement, and I hope that through the diversity of topics a unifying holistic approach can be discerned as well.

"In the front pages of the Calendar you will once again find an introduction to basic astronomy, and a guide for using the charts to allow the timing of your gardening and farming activities to be supported by lunar and planetary rhythms. You will also find a history of humanity's relation to the starry world and a way to follow the planets' movement through the constellations throughout the year.

"Last year, through a collaboration of calendar editors in America, Australia, and England, an attempt was begun to coordinate amateur experimental efforts. This year we are again encouraging our readers to contribute in a modest way to the development of research to determine the effect of sowing during eclipses and perigee. I have shared some thoughts on the challenges of such research in the front pages, and you will find a proposal for experiments for 2014 on the inside of the back cover."
